There are 2 hard truths to half marathon training:
Your bowels run like a well-oiled machine and speedwork kind of sucks.
The training plan I'm using for this year's Monumental Half consists of some strategic speedwork sessions that required me to calculate different paces for different distances in order to help me reach my overall target pace for the half marathon. Last night was a tempo workout. Using the plan's formula, I determined that my tempo workouts need to be close to an 8:15 min. per mile pace and to gradually increase the number of tempo miles I run each week. At this point in my training, I'm up to a 4 tempo miles with a warm-up and cool-down mile before and after.
Last night's times were:
Warm-up 1 mile jog: 10:00
Tempo Mile 1: 8:03
Tempo Mile 2: 8:06
Tempo Mile 3: 8:13
Tempo Mile 4: 8:10
Cool-down mile jog: 10:00
Total miles: 6
I was feeling a little worn down by the end of mile 4 (I still can't get rid of this lingering cough!), but I'm happy to report that I'm starting to get more and more comfortable with the discomfort of running faster. For me, speedwork has always been more of a mental obstacle than a physical one. As soon as my breathing starts to feel too labored and my legs begin to burn, my brain immediately wants me to stop because yuck, this doesn't feel good. But I'm starting to be better about pushing through and letting my mind convince my body that it's not actually dying and to keep moving forward.
I still have so far to go, but it's a challenge I really enjoy.
Last night was also my opportunity to take my new shoes for their inaugural run. Overall? I'm pretty happy with them! The cushioning felt good and I had plenty of room in the toe box (and they looked so bright and clean in the setting sun!), but I'll give my final report after my next long run.
My photo bears a striking resemblance to Principal Anderson from Billy Madison. Scary.
