The first post of 2014

Well, hello there, 2014! You look oddly similar to 2013 ...

Except for the snow on the ground this morning. That's new.

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you spent your NYE surrounded by friends and family and started 2014 off on a high note! I personally think that the whole "WE NEED TO PARTY OUR FACES OFF SINCE THE CALENDAR YEAR IS CHANGING!" thing is a bit over-hyped (I hate feeling pressure to be festive and have the time of my life. When does it ever live up to expectations?), but I welcome any excuse to have my friends around me.

Clayton and I hosted our first ever NYE party as homeowners (and our first NYE's party PERIOD) and counted down to midnight with some of our closet friends. There was yummy food, Cards Against Humanity (when is that game ever NOT fun?), and looooooots of bubbly.

I wanted to do provide a hopefully-one-day signature New Year's Eve cocktail and decided to try my hand at vodka tonics. Vodka and I had a love-hate relationship in college, but we're back on good terms and I thought it would be fun to stock our alcohol cabinet with something different for a change (You know you might have a problem when you clear out an entire cabinet kitchen cabinet to store your booze.) I selected Smirnoff's Light Sorbet vodka in Raspberry Pomegranate and purchased the obligatory tonic water, lime juice and garnishes.

A mixologist I am not, but the cocktails were actually pretty delicious and refreshing!

And please take note of that SWEET, SWEET Joseph Joseph prep board! (Thanks, Mitch and Molly!)

In fear of making our house look like a child's sad, sad birthday party, Clay and I kept the decorations next-to-none and just set out a food table for our guests. (Though we did provide noise makers because what's New Year's Eve without a little bit of celebratory obnoxiousness?)

A few guests had to leave early in order to attend other parties they committed to, but I tried to snap a quick group pick during the final countdown to midnight. I totally cut out most of my husband's face (far right). We're off to a good start this year, dear.

I apologize for the poor quality of this picture. I think the countdown was almost in the single digits at this point, and I was frantic to get everyone together in enough time to run back to my hubby for my 2014 midnight smooch!

And I should also point out that the beautiful couple you see on the far left is Justin and his soon-to-be bride, Jamie. Those crazy kids finally got engaged earlier in December and I can't WAIT for their nuptials!

On New Year's Day, Clay's parents invited everyone over for a traditional New Year's Day meal that included sauerkraut for prosperity (and gas), pork for good luck (and gas), lentils for wealth (and gas), and cornbread for more prosperity

I have high hopes for 2014 and after the dust had settled from our NYE's party, Clay and I began discussing our goals and resolutions for the new year. Clayton wants to do well in his spring classes and discover his passions, and I just want to do three things:

1.) Drink more water
2.) Write something.
3.) Invest more in people. (I had the same resolution last year, but it's one that bares repeating.)

Oh yeah, and run a crap-ton of miles because that's one of my passions in any year. I'm already completely signed up for my half marathons for the year and believe it or not, I am super duper excited to start training again. Crazy, right?

And in case you were wondering, Joey is just as cute in 2014 and he was in 2013.

Blessings to all in the new year!
