I’m lying on my belly on the floor literally 6 inches from the wall because our wireless isn’t working, and I need an internet connection so I can send these 16 giant files to my freelance manager. As of 11:15 p.m. this evening, I have worked 12 hours today trying to add color to some of the most obnoxious illustrations I’ve ever encountered as a freelancer. 12 HOURS. That’s 12 hours on top of another two full days work I did on this book last week. This book is my enemy, and I am so glad to see it go. The images are adorably drawn, but there are just too many nooks and crannies to keep straight and so much detail that I thought my brain was going to explode. Theoretically, I guess I could send the finished project to her in the morning, but this project has been such a pain in my side that I honestly don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep tonight knowing these files are still lurking around on my hard drive.

And it's not even the book's fault at all.  It's my laptop. There is something wrong with our computer battery.  It already needs to be plugged in at all times because it won't hold a charge, but now it's gotten into the habit of just randomly SHUTTING OFF and causing me to lose valuable work because I don't have the time or the patience to hit CTRL S every two freakin' seconds (Bitter? Me? No way).  I am quickly losing patience.  I am uncomfortable, tired, grouchy, and sick of looking at this laptop.

But just to give you a better visual: I am wearing Clayton’s boxer shorts from like a zillion years ago that are too small for him since he wore them in HIGH SCHOOL, and I have that matched with a pair of his black tube socks that go up to my knees. It’s official – I have let myself go. It’s a good thing Clayton is sick with the flu because otherwise he might be threatened with the thought of having to sleep with me.

I think I have rug burn on my elbows.

Anyway, today I attempted to go on my first run outside since early November when it was still a manageable 50 degrees out. Today it was 35, breezy, and spitting rain. It felt wonderful. Taking fresh air into my lungs while I ran on the trails is so much more refreshing than the big gulps of garlic breath and B.O. I’m used to taking in when I run on the treadmill next to complete strangers who clearly never developed proper personal hygiene habits. Seriously, I was working out yesterday next to two girls who were on the elliptical machines more for socializing than actual exercise, when one of them let out a burp that wafted into my nostrils smelling exactly like chicken parmesan.

And guess what?

Now I never want to eat chicken parmesan again.

As a rule of thumb, no one should be allowed to work out until at least 3 hours after a meal (or however long digestion takes). It’s kinda like the rule that you should wait 30 minutes before you swim so you don’t get a cramp or, in this case, make me throw up on you.

Or, at the very least, brush your teeth and pop an Altoid. I know it’s the gym and we’re supposed to be relaxed and comfortable, but would it kill you to put on deodorant and belch with your mouth closed?

So, anyway, I was able to run outside for the first time in eons and it felt so good I opted to run 6 miles instead of the 4 I originally planned on. I was delighted to discover that my time of running 6 miles outside has greatly improved since I started training back in August of this past year. Today, after not having run outside in months and without having run on any sort of natural incline, I was still able to run the distance in 20 minutes less than it took me before the marathon. Now, I’m still obviously not the fastest, most seasoned runner out there, but holy moly! I was proud of myself.

I can’t believe how far I’ve come since I started training last summer. My pastor at church mentioned one Sunday that he was going to try and train for a marathon. I leaned over to Clayton and said, “Huh. You know what? I think I will too!”

I don’t think my pastor ever reached that goal because he never brought it up again, but I stuck with it. And I’m really glad I picked up the habit again because it’s done wonders for me in so many ways. In high school I just ran to be skinny, but now I like to run because it just feels awesome. Anyone who says they hate running hasn’t really given it a chance. Everyone hates running at the beginning because it’s hard and it takes work. But if you really stick with it and keeping going back out there, it will get easier and … dare I say … actually start being fun.

And it seems like the running bug has spread like wild fire amongst my group of facebook friends. Every day I see at least another friend of mine posting that they were heading out for a run or just got back from one. And every single time it reminds me of Anchorman:

“Veronica and I trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. it might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.”


I can’t wait until spring when I can actually run outside without an additional thousand layers of clothing.

I miss spring … and summer … and warm weather … and being tan … and wearing a swimsuit at least once every week … and playing softball … and going to the drive-in … and going camping …

I think I so totally get seasonal depression. I hate being cooped up in the house all day.

Not to mention winter weather wreaks havoc on my hair. I think I’ve had my hair in a pony tail since Thanksgiving for that very reason.

Okay, my back is killing me. I can’t lay like this anymore. I am getting up, marching myself into the kitchen, and getting a fudgesicle.


UPDATE: I originally wrote this post at 11:30 p.m. while I was trying to upload the colorist files to my email. 2 hours and two computer shut downs later, I am STILL not finished sending these stupid files. Scratch the last thing I said. I am getting up, marching myself into the kitchen, and getting a beer.

  1. I'm almost 100% sure that beer is the best medicine for a wretched computer.

    By the way, it sounds like your power pack is going out. In which case, I would suggest getting a removable hard drive and backing your computer up in case it decides to crap out completely.

    While you can still get your files off of the computer after it has crapped out, its much better to have a back up. :)

  2. Is there any problem that a cold beer can't fix? (well, except for alcoholism).

    I took your suggestion and asked my husband to pick up a hard drive today. If I somehow lost all of my files permanently, I might start stalking around downtown and smashing buildings and knocking cars over.

  3. My computer has been not charging either. It claims I need a new battery AND a new charger. I constantly have to leave mine plugged in too and can only charge the battery if I go to Mom's and use her charger. And my battery lasts about 3% of the time it use to. I love technology.

    Also, you can set up your computer programs to do automatic saves every couple of minutes or so so you aren't constantly doing "Ctrl S." All mine are set up that way. I never loose work now.

  5. It would be somewhere in your main program preferences or settings. Like if I use QuarkXpress I have to go into EDIT>PREFERENCES> then "Open and Save" ... other programs should be similar....
