4 Miles

Thursday, August 12, 2010

I wish I could have a movie montage fast-forwarding through the next two months of my mini-marathon training and end with me crossing the finish line in Indy.  I'd even run up a giant flight of stadium stairs and jump up and down with my fists in the air for good measure.  That would make this whole thing suck a lot less - just skip the hard work and get straight to the reward.

Oh, if only life were that easy.

Tonight I ran my semi-long run of the week, 4 miles.  I'm sure I've ran a stretch of 4 miles at some point in my life, probably back in my 8th grade track days or when I used to run around my neighborhood in high school, but tonight you could have fooled my body into believing this was the very first time.  I stupidly ate a huge dinner and OD'd on Reese's no-bake dessert, knowing full well that I needed to go out on the trail just an hour later ... but I can't say no to peanut butter anything.  So I was actually quite surprised (and quite pleased with myself) that I managed to run the entire distance without stopping.  Yes, 4 miles is just a drop in the bucket for a mini-marathon, but I'd rather being making a small splash than no splash at all.

There's a reason so many millions of people will never attempt to run a marathon - it sucks.

But I am a glutton for punishment.

And I love the way I feel after I run.

And I love the way I feel while I run - strong and capable, visions of sugar plums and washboard abs dancing in my head.  It makes me stop chastising my body for all that it isn't and start appreciating it for what it is.  I wouldn't be able to be the athlete I am if I had wispy bird legs.  My softball/volleyball thighs give me my power, and for that I am not ashamed.

But ask me if I still feel this way while I'm doing my 5 mile run on Saturday. Oy!
